HIKING FOOTWEAR

Choosing the right hiking boot can be a complicated procedure. The first question you need to ask yourself is what type of hiking I am doing. For most of us it is a day hiking boot that can easily double as dog walking footwear. There is a difference between day hiking and a backpacking boot. These boots are designed to support you when carrying heavier loads and deep trips into the back-country.

For the purposes of this discussion we will concentrate on daily hiking footwear. Available in shoes, mid or high cut models, their purpose is for day hikes, exercise walking and back packing trips with light loads. They do not offer the lateral stability of a boot designed for use when carrying a heavy load. Typically, this type of footwear is lighter in weight with flexible out-soles which require very little break in time.  Available in a variety of fabrics and leathers and depending on how much you want to spend; waterproof or non-waterproof. A great example is the Merrell Moab for both men and women and the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v7 and the Fresh foam X Hierro Mid. The advantage of buying actual waterproof boots is that they can double as winter footwear. A waterproof hiking shoe or boot will not be as warm as a true winter boot. But for most temperate climates, they are work just fine for about half our winter days.

This autumn season, Miller Shoes is pleased to introduce the Lowa hiking brand. Since 1923, Lowa has earned the reputation for making high quality outdoor boots and shoes, and all made in Europe .We offer the Rengade GTX high and low for both women and men. Lowa, Merrell, New Balance and Dunham are the feature hiking brands. They all have several things in common, they are waterproof, orthotic friendly, good grip outsoles and available in wide widths.
